Neuro Urology

Urologe mit Patient

The term neuro urology refers to diagnosis of and therapy for dysfunctions of the bladder and sphincter muscle, as well as sexual dysfunction. This is due to the defective nerve supply to the organs in question. Dysfunctions of the urinary tract occur in many clinical pictures, in particular in the case of a damaged spinal cord, such as with paraplegia or a meningomyelocele.
Neurological diseases (such as multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's disease or strokes) can also cause metabolic diseases (such as diabetes mellitus), or nerve damage (for example, after a slipped disk neurogenic bladder and sexual dysfunctions
Possible clinical symptoms:

  • Frequent urge to urinate
  • Incontinence
  • Bladder-voiding problems with residual urine
  • Urinary tract infections
  • Pains in the minor pelvis
  • Sexual dysfunctions
  • erectile dysfunction
  • Fertility problems

Bladder dysfunctions can frequently occur without symptoms in patients with damaged spinal cords, in particular. However, asymptomatic dysfunctions can lead to permanent kidney damage.

It is only a few years since complications arising from bladder dysfunctions were still the most frequent cause of death in patients with spinal paralysis. The damage that results from this can only be prevented by timely diagnosis and treatment. Therefore, regular urological checks are imperative in order to distinguish between different forms of bladder dysfunctions and to facilitate effective treatment.
