Anaesthesiology

Anästhesiologie (Narkose

What does anaesthesiology mean?

The Greek word „anaesthesia“ means being without feeling or being numbed.

We distinguish

  • Local anaesthesia, or localised numbing, in which a small area of the body is anaesthetised by injection of a local anaesthetic;
  • Regional anaesthesia, in which a larger portion of the body is anaesthetised; and
  • General anaesthesia, in which the patient enters a temporary state of unconsciousness and pain perception in the entire body is switched off.

All regional and general anaesthetics are carried out under the supervision of a physician specialised in anaesthesiology.

Aanesthesiology refers to science and research pertaining to the field of anaesthesia.
Analgesia is the elimination of pain perception only.
